BP Pulse shifts home charger sales exclusively to fleets


BP Pulse has stopped selling home charging units directly to consumers today and only offers them to fleet customers, opting for a more simplified business approach. This move is part of the company’s adjustment in its EV infrastructure plans.

According to bp pulse, home charging is crucial for fleets whose drivers take their vehicles home, so it has not fully withdrawn from the wall box markets but from direct B2C sales.

“bp pulse is committed to delivering the world-class charging infrastructure the UK needs, but to do so, we must ensure we are fully focused on the areas in which we believe we can make the greatest impact,” Akira Kirton, VP of bp pulse, said commenting on the move today. “By discontinuing our direct-to-consumer offer, we will be able to devote our full attention to providing the best possible EV charging offer for electric vehicle drivers and EV fleets.”

Such fleet cooperations are already underway with BP having ties to Uber. The companies have entered into a new mobility partnership in April to allow Uber drivers to access BP Pulse’s HPC charging network. Initially, the collaboration will focus on core markets in Europe, the UK and the US.

Still, the company will continue to support consumers who have already purchased wall boxes from BP, including honoring the full three-year warranty period and completing installations. The announcement did not include information on how many consumers many be affected.

More generally, BP is focussed on providing public fast charging since the oil and gas corporation considers EV charging one of the “key growth engines” driving bp’s transformation to an “integrated energy” company.

BP Pulse aims to grow its network of public EV charging points to over 100,000 worldwide by 2030. This has largely been done through acquisition, a strategy also being followed by competitor Shell. In the case of BP, the company acquired Chargemaster in the UK in 2018. Rebranded to BP Pulse, its presence has extended rapidly across the world to China, Germany, Netherlands, and the USA.
