Formula E: Jaguar to compete in 2024 with Evans and Cassidy

Jaguar TCS Racing has signed current World Championship runner-up Nick Cassidy for the 2024 Formula E season. The driver from New Zealand, who competed for Envision Racing until now, will be the new driver alongside Mitch Evans for the British racing team.

With the signing of Cassidy, Jaguar will be fielding an all-New Zealand driver duo in the coming season. Together, the two drivers from Auckland have scored 15 wins, 37 podium finishes, eleven pole positions and 1,076 championship points, Jaguar states in their statement.

While Cassidy only signed a contract for the 2024 season (starting in Mexico City on 13 January), long-time Jaguar driver Evans extended his contract by several years. Officially, there is talk of him joining the team “from 2024,” and the in the German press release, it even says that he will start for Jaguar TCS Racing in the upcoming season “and beyond.” But the exact duration of the contract is not confirmed.

In the recently concluded ninth season of Formula E, Nick Cassidy secured second place in the drivers’ standings, with Envision Racing taking victory in the team standings. Cassidy won three races in a row – first the second round in Berlin, then Monaco and the debut in Portland. That there were cracks in Cassidy’s relationship with Envision Racing became apparent at the penultimate round of the season in London: Cassidy initially complained over the team radio about a lack of consultation with his team-mate Sebastian Buemi, until he forfeited his final championship chance after a collision with Buemi, of all people.

At Jaguar itself, a driver change had also been in the air. Previous works driver Sam Bird primarily attracted attention due to accidents (also with his team-mate Evans in India) and was also unable to keep up with the pace of the other Jaguar drivers: With eighth place, Bird was the lowest-placed of the four Jaguar-powered drivers in the final standings. It is not yet known whether the experienced Briton will compete for another team in Formula E in the future.

“We are thrilled to announce that Nick Cassidy has joined Jaguar TCS Racing. Nick’s track record speaks for itself,” says Jaguar team principal James Barclay. “Since joining Formula E he has gone from strength to strength and his 2023 season was very impressive. Nick was highly motivated to join the team and we are proud to welcome him into the Jaguar family.”
