Solaris expands annual capacity by 500 buses

Polish bus manufacturer Solaris has opened a new production hall in Środa Wielkopolska near Poznań. With a total area of over 7,000 square meters, the facility will be used for the final assembly of city buses. This is set to increase the company's annual capacity by 500 buses.

Until now, Solaris has exclusively assembled its urban buses – many of them featuring battery-electric powertrains – at its plant in Bolechowo, north of Poznań. With the new production hall in Środa Wielkopolska, a second site is now being added for this final assembly stage. However, Solaris remains committed to the greater Poznań area: while the main plant, as mentioned, is located north of the 500,000-resident city, the new facility is situated south-east of Poznań. Both sites are approximately one hour apart.

“We are investing in expanding our production capacity and product portfolio to meet the growing demand for sustainable transport in Europe and in new markets,” said Agata Stańda, CEO of Solaris.

The new production hall, which already employs 300 people, increases Solaris’ manufacturing capacity by around 500 vehicles per year. According to the company, this is a key step towards achieving an annual production and sales target of 2,000 vehicles. For context: in 2023, Solaris delivered 1,631 vehicles to customers, 86 per cent of which were low-emission and zero-emission buses, including battery-electric buses as well as fuel cell and trolleybuses.

During the inauguration of the new production hall, Solaris also announced plans to build another plant in the Środa Wielkopolska municipality, for which 47 hectares of land have already been secured. The planned facility, which will produce intercity buses, is expected to commence operations in 2029.
