Lamborghini presents electric crossover concept

Audi’s Italian subsidiary Lamborghini has unveiled a concept car, the forerunner of its first all-electric model planned for 2028. The Lanzador, which Lamborghini calls the ‘Ultra GT’, is a sporty crossover that is likely to differ from other electric models from the VW Group.

The Italian manufacturer has so far only revealed this much about the technology: a high-performance electric motor on each axle provides a peak output of more than one megawatt or the equivalent of more than 1,360 hp. The all-wheel drive also offers active e-torque on the rear axle for particularly dynamic cornering. The energy is supplied by a “high-performance battery of a new generation” that ensures “a long range”. Five years before the planned start of series production, there are no more details. So whether the Lanzador will use a group platform (such as the SSP) or be built on an independent basis is something the Italians do not want to confirm at the moment, but they also do not want to rule out.

Instead, Lamborghini focuses on the unusual body concept in the press release: the Lanzdaor establishes a new vehicle category – that of the ‘Ultra GT’. The study has one door on each side and a 2+2 seating arrangement. Officially, it is a four-seater, even if the two rear seats are not particularly comfortable, at least for adults. What makes the Lanzador an ‘Ultra GT’ is the combination of the four seats, the high ground clearance and the fact that the vehicle is supposed to “combine the performance and driving pleasure of a super sports car with the versatility of an everyday car”.

“For us, electrification does not mean a restriction, but an intelligent opportunity to develop more performance and drivability,” explains Rouven Mohr, Lamborghini’s Chief Technical Officer. Therefore, the company wants “no compromises in terms of power, driving pleasure and performance: this is an all-electric Lamborghini that customers can enjoy every day”. Lamborghini emphasises that the hardware components, software, and control systems will define the brand’s future electrified high-performance vehicles. “Lamborghini will define and differentiate itself in the future through a strategy of all active-control systems. We are taking Lamborghini integrated driving dynamics control to a whole new level, which has not been possible for production sports cars before and offers our customers a completely new driving experience,” says Mohr.

In addition to an active driving dynamics control and active aerodynamics, at least the study also has a particularly precise torque dwell and “Wheelspeed Control,” according to the statement. “A key advantage of electric sports cars with two motors is the precise torque distribution for enhanced driving dynamics. In the Lamborghini concept, the control element calculates the necessary or desired torque for each axle individually within milliseconds, with the two motors differentiating and serving the left and right sides on the rear axle,” it says. “With Wheelspeed Control, Lamborghini very finely regulates power and force at the individual wheels for even more precise turn-in, and direct as well as fast driving on particularly winding roads and with strong acceleration.”

Lamborghini will build the production model in Sant’Agata Bolognese. For this purpose, the site will be expanded and additional employees will be hired. As reported, the Lanzador will be followed by the second generation of the SUV model Urus as a pure electric model from 2029. Before that, Lamborghini plans to electrify its entire product range with hybrid technology by the end of 2024. In March, the Italian manufacturer presented its first production model with a plug-in hybrid drive, the Revuelto.

“With Lanzador we are looking into our future without forgetting our DNA. The first coupés from Lamborghini with their front engines were sporty, elegant Gran Turismos suitable for everyday use as 2+2-seaters,” says Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann. “The concept for our fourth production model leverages our philosophy of super sportiness combined with brave new technologies and fearless design, perfectly fitting into our Direzione Cor Tauri strategy.”
