Webasto presents telematics module for batteries

With a retrofittable hardware module, customers can make their Webasto battery systems telematics-capable at a later date. This should not only enable more precise diagnoses, but also software updates to be installed in the battery system.

Webasto introduces a telemetry service for traction batteries of electric vehicles. The retrofittable Field Data Monitoring hardware module for Webasto’s standard battery system enables vehicle manufacturers to collect traction battery diagnostic data, perform software updates or remote maintenance, and obtain extended warranty services.

Field Data Monitoring transmits the battery’s performance parameters to Webasto’s cloud backend. This should then provide manufacturers with an overview of the current performance data and the condition of their vehicle batteries. With the module, customers should also be able to access some new comfort functions – in addition to the pure display of performance values, these are extended diagnostic data and also the aforementioned software updates over the air.

Additionally, trained specialists are also to be able to carry out remote maintenance of the battery in case of problems. All in all, the new service kit “saves vehicle manufacturers valuable time, costs and effort otherwise invested in face-to-face meetings or maintenance appointments”, Webasto writes.

Since more data points on the condition of the respective battery are available via Field Data Monitoring, Webasto has linked the new “Guarantee Plus” (G+) warranty offer to the telematics module. If the regular measured values are within the defined performance parameters when used properly, G+ takes effect and offers vehicle and machine manufacturers maximum security for vehicle operation or possible follow-up costs with an extended warranty package.

“Telemetry solutions play an important role in mobility transition. They still offer tremendous optimization potential for electric fleet and special vehicles,” says Dr Lena Beckmann, Director Product and Service Management Battery at Webasto. “With Webasto Field Data Monitoring, we have designed a software environment that provides vehicle and machine manufacturers with new functions for our battery systems. Our customers will benefit from enhanced convenience when operating their machines, while at the same time enjoying greater transparency, control, know-how, and safety.”
