Fastned has officially announced its expansion into Spain. The Dutch company has signed a contract to build its first fast-charging site in Spain, which will be located on the A42 highway near Madrid.

The new charging hub near Madrid is planned to offer eight charging stations with up to 400 kW of power each. In addition to this site, Fastned is planning a further six fast-charging parks in Spain, the locations and details of which will be announced at a later date.

Spain is the ninth country in which Fastned is active, after launching in Denmark and Switzerland last July. Italy followed in September of the same year. In the UK, Fastned is even cooperating with other charging providers to set up a lobby group, as reported last April. There, the Dutch company also passed a milestone in early 2023, having opened its 13th charging hub in the UK.

“Entering the Spanish market is a milestone for Fastned. Spain still has a long way to go in terms of electric mobility. At the same time, 2023 has been a good year for electric vehicle uptake in Spain: 70% more electric vehicles were sold in 2023 compared to the previous year,” said Michiel Langezaal, CEO of Fastned, adding: “With the Spanish government controlling the operation of many motorways, they have a great opportunity to be at the forefront of implementing the important European AFIR regulation by means of competitive tenders and issuing concessions for charging stations along the core motorway network of Spain.”
