ADL to deliver 12 battery-electric buses to California

Scottish bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis (ADL) has been commissioned to supply twelve electric double-deckers to the USA. The buses will hit the road in Los Angeles under Foothill Transit.

The customer is the Californian public transport company Foothill Transit, which will deploy the twelve Enviro500EVs on its Silver Streak line in the centre of Los Angeles from 2026. The new buses will complement two electric double-deckers that are already in operation for Foothill Transit.

Next to the two electric buses already in service, Foothill Transit has mainly looked at hydrogen buses, placing an order with New Flyer in 2021, and another fuel cell bus order in 2023 with ENC. Foothill Transit also refers to the New Flyer order in its current press release, stating that the 12 electric buses from ADL will join the recently added “33 fuel cell-electric Xcelsior CHARGE FC single deckers from NFI Group sister company New Flyer.”

“This investment in zero emissions technology aligns with our vision for a sustainable future. We are proud to partner with Alexander Dennis to bring these cutting-edge double deck electric buses to our communities,” said Foothill Transit CEO Doran Barnes.

Stephen Walsh, Vice President for Alexander Dennis in North America, added: “We are excited to once again be working with our friends at Foothill Transit. After trials with two earlier Enviro500EV pilot buses, Foothill Transit’s selection of Alexander Dennis next-generation technology for its Sliver Streak route is a huge vote of confidence for us. With increased energy storage, revised drivetrain configuration and modular battery configurations, the Enviro500EV with next-generation technology will improve range and other capabilities vital to the mixed profile of inner-city roads and freeways that are features of the Silver Streak route.”

ADL recently also received an order from another US American customer, with Seattle’s public transport operator Sound Transit ordering 33 electric buses from ADL just last week. This also marked the company’s first delivery in North America for ADL’s new vehicle platform.
