Group14 kicks off silicon carbon anode material production in South Korea
Over 100 manufacturers of batteries for electric vehicles and consumer electronics have already been supplied with the material from the South Korean factory, according to Group14. These battery manufacturers are using these initial volumes to continue their qualification of SCC55 for adoption into various commercial electric vehicle and consumer electronics battery programmes expected to launch in 2025.
Group 14 states that it already launched its first shipments of SCC55 from the factory this month, however, does not specify to whom. The company does specify that it has supplied over 100 customers from its initial production base in Washington State and that the material is “already in over two million smartphones.” The new facility has an “initial annual capacity of 2,000 tonnes of SCC55™ equivalent to 10-gigawatt-hours – enough to power roughly 100,000 to 250,000 electric vehicles per year.”
“By making Group14’s silicon battery material available from multiple sites worldwide for EV and CE programs, we are bringing groundbreaking performance to more consumers who want the advantages of silicon batteries,” said Rick Luebbe, CEO and co-founder of Group14 Technologies. “This world’s first shipment milestone is a testament to the robustness of our manufacturing processes and scalability of our SCC55™ material, now validated and accessible through dual-sourcing for leading EV and CE cell manufacturers.”
Rick Costantino, CTO and co-founder of Group14 Technologies, added: “Group14’s SCC55 material allows silicon batteries to check all of the performance boxes from energy density to extreme fast-charging to scalability.” On the subject of ramping up production and supply chains, electrive recently interviewed Group14 Vice President of Global Market Strategy Grant Ray, who also spoke at length about the company’s plans for its SCC55 material. In July, Group14 also announced multiple major battery orders, so the new factory has its work cut out, alongside standing customers such as Customcells or Porsche. Group14 also claims that with its 100 global customers, “95% of worldwide battery production” is represented.
