Car manufacturer Chery presents its own 6C batteries
The plan to introduce the Kunpeng Solid-state battery brand was announced at the Chery Global Innovation Conference 2024 in Wuhu, Anhui Province. With this milestone in the improved energy technology system, Chery aims to attain an energy density of 400 Wh/kg before the end of this year and top up to 600 Wh/kg in 2025.
It is said that the Kunpeng brand will be rolled out under three major product types: square lithium iron phosphate, square ternary, and large cylindrical ternary. Each product has 6C ultra-fast charging capability and can charge up to 400 km of battery-powered range in 5 minutes. What’s more, the ultra-fast charging products support a wide operating temperature range of -40°C to 65°C.
While the square lithium iron phosphate batteries boast an energy density of 120-160 Wh/kg and support EVs with a 200-600 km of battery-powered range, the square ternary batteries have an energy density of 140-200 Wh/kg and find application in 600-800 km of battery-powered range. The large cylindrical series supports EVs with a 700-1,200 km of battery-powered range. Moreover, the ultra-fast charging products support plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and range extenders (EREVs) with varying battery-powered ranges. Chery also claims that the Kunpeng series is capable of more than 3,000 charging cycles, extending the batteries’ lifespan to 20% longer than industry standards.
The company hopes to set up pilot testing with the first car application in 2026. The Kunpeng Battery brand is only set to hit the commercial market in mass production by 2027. Meanwhile, we expect that the Kunpeng products will start rolling into the Chery vehicle portfolio soon.
Having reportedly sold 44,851 NEVs in June 2024, as stated by Yin Tongyue, chairman of Chery Automobile, the company hopes to reach 80,000 NEVs sales this month and 100,000 by the end of the year.
Another announcement by Chery on emerging technological innovation and initiatives for the automotive ecosystem during the Global Innovation Conference refers to the newly opened Kaiyang Lab. The lab seeks to promote research in advanced automotive vehicle technologies. At the same time, the company unveiled an AI-powered Lion Smart Cockpit solution which aims to provide EV users with solid ergonomics and aesthetics combined with an enjoyable driving experience.
