VoltAero has inaugurated a 2,400-square-meter assembly facility to facilitate the production and delivery of the series of Cassio aircraft. Located in Saint Agnant in the Charente-Maritime department in eastern France, the factory has an annual capacity of 150 aeroplanes. According to the company, the latter finds applications in regional commercial operations, cargo, postal delivery and medical evacuation (Medevac).

VoltAero says that the facility also facilitates sustainable regional air transportation as it has connecting links to Rochefort Airport, which boasts a 2,280m long by 45m wide runway and rail and sea transportation ports.

Jean Botti, the company’s CEO & Chief Technology Officer, says: “We are addressing the essential market requirement to connect thousands of communities and regions around the world with truly sustainable and efficient advanced regional air mobility – while remaining fully compatible with the airport and air traffic control infrastructure.”

The family of Cassio aircraft will feature Safran ENGINeUS electric motors for all-electric power during taxi, takeoff, primary flight, and landing.  Furthermore, Kawaskai Motors will supply the aircraft’s internal combustion engines. The hybrid propulsion power enables the aircraft to function as a range extender, recharging the batteries while in flight.

The facility’s completion has put VoltAero in a position to produce the series of Cassio aircraft, and the company plans to launch the first aircraft version called the “Cassio 330”. The five-seater Cassio 330 will utilise the company’s patented “electric-hybrid propulsion system” with a rated power of 330 kilowatts. Next, the company will develop a six-seater “Cassio 480” featuring 480 kilowatts rated power. After this, the company plans to manufacture the twelve-seater “Cassio 600”, which will boast electric-hybrid propulsion power of 600 kilowatts. The company says that the electric-hybrid propulsion system serves as a backup in the event of a problem with the electric propulsion, ensuring proper fail-safe functionality.
