Public transport operator Movia reaches electric bus target six years early
Of the 1,126 buses, 565 are now purely electric, according to Movia. According to the company, over 51 million kilometres per year are already covered using only electric buses. The 66 new electric buses alone are expected to reduce CO2 emissions (calculated according to the tank-to-wheel principle) by 3,100 tonnes per year, according to Movia.
Together with local authorities and the regions of Hovedstaden and Zealand, the public transport operator set a target in 2020 that half of the buses should be running on electricity by 2030. However, this target has already been reached by the end of 2024. Movia therefore now writes that it has been decided with the municipalities and regions that an electric bus quota of 94 per cent should now be achieved by 2030.
At 94 and not 100 per cent, one might think that the most demanding routes will continue to be served by diesel buses for the time being. However, Movia has announced that even line 600S, which runs between Ishøj station and Hillerød station, is to be electrified with the new buses. With a length of 74.5 kilometres, this is the longest route in the entire Movia region. Electric bus operation is also to be implemented here with charging devices at the final stops.
“For us at Movia, it is a major milestone that we can now say that half of our buses are electric. We are proud to be contributing to lower CO2 emissions as well as less noise and particulate emissions,” says Movia Managing Director Dorthe Nøhr Pedersen. “We are now well ahead of the target we set ourselves in 2020 together with municipalities and regions, and are now jointly setting a new goal towards even greener public transport.”Movia is responsible for the operation of 375 bus routes. 158 of these are already operated exclusively with electric buses, which therefore cover 51,037,833.78 kilometres per year – not including diversions.
