“How Schachinger Logistik Drives Sustainability with XCharge’s Net Zero Series” – Ebersdorfer & Mayr
Schachinger Logistik, a family-owned Austrian company with a rich history in sustainability, has laid out an ambitious “Roadmap to Zero,” targeting climate neutrality by 2040. Christian Mayr, Electric Mobility & Energy Transition Officer at Schachinger Logistik, explained the company’s approach: “Transportation with diesel trucks accounts for over 90% of our emissions,” said Mayr. “By the end of next year, we will have around 30 heavy electric trucks in operation, alongside over 60 electric vans. Starting in 2032, no diesel trucks will be purchased at the latest.”
The transition is already in motion, with 60% of Schachinger’s company cars being battery-electric and solar panels installed at their headquarters powering refrigerated warehouses and electric trucks. However, the shift comes with its own set of challenges, particularly when it comes to depot charging.
“Our cold storage facilities consume significant energy, leaving limited capacity for high-power charging,” noted Mayr. “We face constraints with grid capacity and costly infrastructure upgrades for transformers and cabling. These hurdles demand innovative solutions.”
That is where XCharge Europe comes in. Christoph Ebersdorfer, Regional Sales Manager DACH, highlighted their role in addressing these challenges with the company’s integrated battery storage charger, the Net Zero. “Our Net Zero series is designed to work with limited grid capacity, offering a maximum output of 210 kW from just 60 kW input,” explained Ebersdorfer. “This enables fast, reliable charging without the need for costly grid extensions or new transformers.”
The collaboration between the two companies has yielded impressive results. At Schachinger’s site, the Net Zero unit replaced a traditional DC charger, delivering up to 172 kW of power and reducing electric truck charging times from seven hours to just one hour and 25 minutes. “We’ve recorded up to 157 charging sessions, providing over 15,000 kWh of energy,” said Ebersdorfer. “This not only saves costs but also ensures e-truck drivers can quickly resume their routes. The charger runs smoothly, with zero downtime—a critical factor for logistics operations.”
Mayr expressed satisfaction with the partnership, emphasising the operational and financial benefits: “Our managers are thrilled. The fast-charging capabilities mean our electric trucks can complete their routes efficiently, and we’ve avoided high costs for grid upgrades. We’re extending the pilot to test advanced energy management features and planning to roll this out across four locations in Austria by 2025.”
Looking ahead, both companies are optimistic about the impact of their collaboration. “Products like XCharge’s Net Zero are instrumental in helping us achieve our goals within a short timeframe,” concluded Mayr. “We are evolving into an energy company as much as a logistics provider.”
Ebersdorfer echoed this sentiment, emphasising the importance of industry-wide adoption of electric mobility solutions: “The success of our partnership with Schachinger demonstrates what’s possible when innovative technology meets a strong commitment to sustainability. It’s a model we hope to replicate with other forward-thinking companies.”
