VW beats new range record with the ID.7

VW cracked an efficiency record on a circuit in Nardò in southern Italy: a technically standard ID.7 Pro S with 210 kW power covered a distance of 941 kilometres on one battery charge (86 kWh net).

The average speed during the record-breaking efficiency test was 29 kph and the average consumption was 9.2 kWh/100 km. This is a significant reach beyond the model’s WLTP-rated maximum range of 709 kilometres, breaking the rating range by 232 kilometres or 32.7 per cent.

As Volkswagen writes, if one were to compare the consumption to a diesel equivalent, “the average consumption achieved in Nardò corresponds to about just 1 litre per 100 km.” The test was undertaken in a standard ID.7 Pro S with an 86-kWh battery from the factory in Emden, Germany. The drag coefficient is 0.23 and the electric drive in the rear axle develops a maximum torque of 545 Nm and enables the ID.7 to consume between 16.2 and 13.6 kWh/100 km in the official WLTP cycle. The ID.7 Pro S can accelerate from a standstill to 100 kph in 6.6 seconds.

Volkswagen’s choice for the speed was made due to it being a typical rush hour speed in large cities. According to the latest ‘Traffic Index’ from navigation specialist TomTom, this figure ranges from 22 km/h (Hamburg) to 31 km/h (Amsterdam). The test was conducted on a 12.5-kilometre circuit in December at ambient temperatures of 5 to 15 degrees Celsius.

“We are seeing a positive trend in incoming orders in Europe and are currently selling more ID.7 models than Passat. This shows that the ID.7 is a meaningful all-electric addition to the brand’s product portfolio and, in addition to our successful Passat, is also suitable for long distance drivers and as a company car,” said Martin Sander, member of the Board of Management responsible for Sales, Marketing, After Sales at the Volkswagen brand.

hypermiling was somehow a kind of sports 10 years ago, when Tesla introduced the Model S to Europe. I am sure if I even drive slower we could make the ID7 for 1000km. ;-)

It means that the test was 32 hours long. Can VW please put the car on the same circuit at its top speed -full throttle - and check the duration of the test (may be 32 minutes...)?
