Solaris delivers 37 hydrogen buses to Italy
The Urbino 12 Hydrogen has a 70 kW fuel cell, which derives hydrogen from five composite tanks placed on the bus roof. With the full tanks that can hold 37.5 kg of hydrogen, the bus can cover about 350 km.
The units delivered to TPER have alow-floor design and air conditioning, as well as room for wheelchairs and strollers. About half of the 137 buses ordered will have three doors and be used for urban routes. The other half will be equipped with two doors and deployed in cities and on suburban lines within the Bologna metropolitan area.
“We are honored to contribute to such an ambitious project. The delivery of the first hydrogen buses to Bologna represents a significant milestone in the advancement of sustainable public transport. The Urbino 12 hydrogen buses will help improve air quality, enhancing the well-being of residents in the city and the region,” said Javier Iriarte, CEO of Solaris Bus & Coach, during the official presentation of the hydrogen buses in Bologna.
The delivery is part of an order signed in 2023 for a total of 130 hydrogen buses, with an option of another 140 units. The Bologna City Council had secured funding through the Next Generation EU fund. The fleet renewal is part of the ‘Bologna Mission’ to become a climate-neutral city by 2030.
According to information published at the time, the first H2 buses were to be handed over in 2024, the rest in 2025 and 2026. It also said that most of the buses will be deployed in Bologna and three in Ferrara. It is not clear how the first batch will be distributed.
