DHL opens more electric vehicle centres in Asia

The DHL Group wants to position itself as a broad-based logistics partner for the raw materials, battery and electric mobility industries. To this end, the delivery service is setting up special electric vehicle competence centres - now also increasingly in the Asia-Pacific region.

DHL promises its customers the transport of entire electric vehicles or components, from raw materials to batteries and spare parts procurement, via comprehensive logistics and supply chain solutions. The logistics provider wants to excel in this industry as it has identified the new energy sector as a key growth area in its 2030 strategy: “As the sector matures, there is an increasing need to repurpose end-of-life EV parts and batteries or recycle them for raw materials, DHL stated in its press release.

To achieve the transfer of know-how and, at the same time, be able to react to local conditions, DHL is opening so-called EV competence centres in various countries that are particularly strong in the upstream products of electric cars. The company is increasingly focusing on Asia. DHL already opened three centres in China, Singapore and Indonesia in 2024. The roll-out is now set to continue in India, Japan, Malaysia and Thailand.

In the course of the centre opening in China (more precisely in Shanghai), we already reported on how the new facility works. DHL already operates further competence centres in Mexico, the United Arab Emirates, Italy and the UK. The services that DHL offers its customers with the new EV competence centre essentially comprise certified transport services in the import/export sector and the certified storage of components and vehicles. Anything but trivial: as batteries are categorised as hazardous goods, strict safety and official regulations must be observed during transport and storage, for example, says DHL.

“When people think of EVs, it is often associated with the finished vehicle itself. However, there is an entire complex ecosystem behind the EV value chain, which is crucial in orchestrating the process. That is our advantage as DHL Group, as we can offer customized solutions for every segment utilizing our expertise and our extensive global network,” said Audrey Gerard, Vice President of Auto-Mobility, Asia Pacific, DHL Customer Solutions and Innovation.
