Volvo Trucks introduces charge point booking service

Volvo Trucks is pressing ahead with the development of new services for charging electric trucks. The ‘Volvo Open Charge’ service now offers the option of booking a charging point in advance. Swedish customers Arla and DFDS are the first to use the booking part of the service.

Volvo Trucks is advertising its new service function as a boon to hauliers and transport companies, for whom the service “makes it easy to find all reliable and quality-assured heavy-duty charging stations and then charge,” as well as maximising availability and uptime of electric truck fleets. The Swedish truck manufacturer adds that payment has also been integrated into the service at all stations where Volvo has a partnership.

Two customers have already been signed up for the service with Ara and DFDS, who are currently testing the system with the aim of gathering feedback to improve and further develop it. While the network only currently has 41 charging stations integrated, Volvo Trucks is aiming to build one of Sweden’s largest coherent networks of public charging stations with renewable electricity for heavy traffic.

“We are very pleased to drive the development forward in sustainable transport and to be able to launch this booking function. We are working to make it easier for transport companies and hauliers to make the transition to emission-free transport, and this requires good services that support them in their daily operations,” said Ebba Bergbom Wallin, Head of Electromobility, Volvo Trucks Sweden, adding: “With the possibility to book your charging time, we enable higher availability for hauliers’ electric trucks. We hope that more operators will join us in driving the transition.”

In 2023, Volvo Trucks began tracking charging stations for electric trucks across Sweden, even opening the service for vehicles from all manufacturers. Volvo is also a founding member of Milence, alongside Daimler Truck and Traton. They want to build a charging network for trucks and coaches in Europe. Half a billion euros is being put towards truck charging stops in Germany, the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Norway, and Sweden. Volvo Trucks’ charging management system was introduced in the summer of last year.
