Gijón orders electric buses from Irizar
EMTUSA (short for Empresa Municipal de Transportes Urbanos de Gijón) has ordered four electric city buses, each 12 metres long, from Irizar. The operator has opted for the Irizar ie model. They are expected to be delivered in March 2026 and will run on line 10. The line crosses the city of Gijón from west to east and currently transports over 2.8 million passengers per year.
The buses have a charging capacity of up to 150 kW and are charged via pantograph or CCS2 connection at the depot. In terms of safety, Irizar’s electric buses are equipped with the GSR2 ADAS standard, which also includes cybersecurity measures to protect the vehicle.
Meanwhile, the vehicles now ordered from Irizar are not the first electric buses for EMTUSA: the transport company only put six new Urbino 12 electric buses from Polish manufacturer Solaris into operation in February. These electric buses are part of the 2024-2027 fleet renewal plan, which envisages the purchase of a total of 21 electric buses and 16 hybrid articulated buses.
The depots have been structurally adapted to ensure the operation of the electric buses. Between September 2024 and February 2025, the first six charging points with a capacity of 150 kW each were installed. A total of up to 90 charging points will be created – 74 pantographs and 16 with cables. Two new transformer stations with a total output of 5,000 kVA will secure the system’s power supply.
Back to Irizar: in the course of the order, the Spanish manufacturer proudly emphasises that it has exceeded the 1,200 mark for electric buses produced in total, just nine years after founding its eMobility division. Irizar recently reported orders from Barcelona, London and Luxembourg, just to name a few.
