GAC launches electric cars in Brazil and takes aim for local production
GAC launched five electric vehicles in Brazil at a launch event recently, including four electrified SUVs and one ride-hailing vehicle. Specifically, these are the Aion V, Aion Y, Hyptec HT, Trumpchi GS4 and Aion ES models. With the exception of the GS4 (hybrid), these are all-electric cars. According to CarNewsChina, GAC has so far established a network of 33 dealerships in the country for the market launch. What’s more, the Chinese manufacturer is assuming that demand will develop to such an extent that it will be worthwhile setting up local production. As things currently stand, the company plans to start building its own factory in Brazil by the end of 2026.
According to Reuters, the market launch of GAC is a further indication that competition is increasing in the world’s sixth-largest automotive market. The Chinese brands BYD, Chery and GWM are already present there. GAC is now following suit and announced last year that it intends to invest six billion reais (around 930 million euros) in Brazil within five years. According to Wei Haigang, President of GAC International, the company expects to sell 100,000 vehicles over the next five years as part of its ‘Brazil Action Plan.’
In principle, GAC is aiming to export 500,000 vehicles to 100 countries and regions around the world by 2027. The manufacturer formulated this target last year and christened the corresponding roadmap ‘Panyu Action.’ Of course, this will require a steady increase: as CarNewsChina writes, GAC sold more than 100,000 vehicles abroad for the first time in 2024, which corresponds to an increase of 92.3% compared to the previous year.
