UK electric van sales surge nearly 73% in July

Battery-electric van registrations in the UK rose 72.6% year-on-year in July to 2,442 units, marking eight straight months of growth. However, looking at the overall LCV market in the UK, there is still room to grow.

UK battery-electric van registrations rose sharply in July, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). It also states that there are more than 40 electric van models available, covering a wide range of payloads and price points.

The uptake comes as manufacturers continue to invest heavily in zero-emission LCVs, aiming to meet government-mandated sales targets. However, BEVs represented just 8.8% of total LCV registrations in the year to date, well short of the 16% required. The SMMT says this gap underlines the need for measures to boost operator confidence, including faster depot grid connections, streamlined planning approvals and public charging infrastructure suited to larger vans.

Overall, the UK LCV market fell by 5.1% in July to 24,433 units, with declines across most segments. The SMMT’s revised 2025 forecast now predicts 321,000 total registrations, with BEVs taking an 8.6% share. The 2026 BEV share is projected at 13.7%, still below the 24% mandated.

“Manufacturers continue to invest in delivering a diverse range of zero emission vans to suit every use case, and it’s encouraging to see uptake growing – but to meet mandated targets, it must grow faster,” emphasised Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive. “Accelerating infrastructure rollout, streamlining planning processes and providing targeted support for fleet operators are essential to drive progress and keep the UK at the forefront of road transport decarbonisation.”
