Electric car sales in Scandinavia continue to rise

Alongside Norway, where 97.2 per cent of all new passenger car registrations in July were electric, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden also recorded growth in new EV sales. Yet there is a marked difference – demand for Teslas.

At electrive, we regularly report on registration figures in Norway – the flagship country for electric mobility has posted remarkable growth in recent years. The tipping point has long been passed, with EVs consistently accounting for more than 95 per cent of all new registrations. In July, 9,291 of 9,563 new registrations were fully electric.

Other Scandinavian countries are also seeing strong growth in EV sales. In Denmark, the EV share in July reached 67.2 per cent, up from just under 51 per cent in July last year. In Finland, the share was 36.3 per cent compared to 25.8 per cent a year ago. Sweden recorded 35.6 per cent, up slightly from just under 34 per cent in July 2024.

July is often a relatively quiet month in the car trade. This year, however, registrations in Scandinavia increased. According to the Norwegian Road Traffic Information Council (OFV), one factor is growing market optimism. In addition, some manufacturers and importers launched campaigns to capitalise on improved consumer sentiment. Rising demand has also led to longer delivery times for certain EV models – meaning some of the vehicles delivered and registered in July had been ordered months earlier.

While EV registrations have risen to varying degrees in all four countries, there is a clear difference in model and brand preferences. In Norway, the Tesla Model Y topped the rankings in July, but Tesla did not feature in the top ten in the other Nordic countries.

The figures also highlight the much higher penetration of EVs in Norway: all models in the country’s top-ten list are fully electric, while in Denmark, Sweden and Finland, internal combustion and hybrid vehicles still feature among the most popular models.
