ProLogium and CEA present recyclable solid-state battery module

Taiwanese company ProLogium Technology and French research organisation CEA are jointly developing a solid-state battery module designed for easy disassembly and recycling. The prototype, aimed at the automotive sector, will be presented at IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich.

The prototype module employs a non-welded structure, which makes it possible to access and recover individual cells. This enables efficient separation of materials such as electrolytes and electrodes for recycling and reuse. At the same time, the design maintains compact dimensions and high performance.

The approach is based on “Design-for-Disassembly”, which allows cells to be removed individually and replaced without dismantling the entire pack. The aim is to reduce electronic waste, shorten repair times and improve recycling efficiency.

Conventional liquid batteries using cell-to-pack and cell-to-chassis designs to increase energy density have limited repair options, Prologium states in its press release. “If a single cell fails, the entire module must often be shredded and scrapped,” it says. However, repairable designs usually require more space, lowering energy density at pack level. ProLogium’s ceramic solid-state cells are designed to offset this trade-off, offering high intrinsic energy density alongside safety and fast charging capability.

The partners have worked together since late 2024 to create a module that combines high energy density with a repairable, modular structure.
The collaboration also has a strategic dimension. By building a system that can be repaired and recycled, the partners address Europe’s goals of industrial autonomy and circularity in the battery sector.

The CEA contributes its expertise in engineering, prototyping and validation, while ProLogium provides its solid-state ceramic cells. The module mock-up marks the first visible outcome of the partnership, which started in 2024, and is positioned as a scalable solution for the automotive industry. And also, it complies with upcoming EU battery regulations to promote a circular economy.

ProLogium has been active in France for years. In 2023, it received 1.5 million euros in French state aid for its R&D project “Prometheus” to create solid-state batteries that would also be recyclable. Morever, the Taiwanese company “inaugurated its first overseas R&D center in Paris-Saclay” and will build its first overseas gigafactory in Dunkirk in northern France. Construction is supposed to start next year.
