UK: Mazda simplifies powertrain line-up for the Mazda6e

Mazda has announced UK pricing and specifications for the all-electric Mazda6e. The saloon arrives this summer with a single 78 kWh LFP battery, two high-spec trim levels and a WLTP range of up to 348 miles, positioning it below £40,000.

Both UK trim levels, called Takumi and Takumi Plus, undercut the £40,000 mark, with the latter priced at £39,995. For the UK, Mazda has simplified the European powertrain line-up. While the Mazda6e launched on the continent with 68.8 kWh LFP and 80 kWh NCM battery options, UK buyers will receive a single 78 kWh LFP battery.

According to the manufacturer, this delivers a combined WLTP range of up to 348 miles. DC fast charging from 10 to 80 per cent takes 24 minutes at up to 195 kW, while the rear-wheel-drive drivetrain produces 190 kW and 290 Nm of torque, enabling a 0–62 mph time of 7.9 seconds.

The fact that UK buyers will always get a Mazda6e with an LFP battery is good news. As we discussed during our drive review earlier this year, the 80 kWh NMC battery offered in Germany, for example, has one clear drawback: while the smaller (LFP) battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in just 27 minutes at up to 165 kW, the larger ‘Long Range’ battery charges at only 90 kW – resulting in an outdated charging time of 47 minutes. Simplifying the powertrain line-up certainly makes the EV more appealing to a greater customer base.

The exterior follows Mazda’s latest ‘Kodo Soul of Motion’ design language, with a low roofline, short rear deck and coupe-like silhouette. It features frameless doors, illuminated front signature wings that indicate charging status, a full-width rear light bar and an electronically deployable rear spoiler. Aerodynamically optimised 19-inch wheels are fitted as standard.

Inside, the Mazda6e features a panoramic roof and a floating centre console. The cockpit includes a 14.6-inch central touchscreen, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and an augmented reality head-up display. Luggage capacity stands at 336 litres at the rear, complemented by a 72-litre front boot, which is less than in the variant we tested.

“In the UK we are facing some unique and complex challenges in the balance between EV legislation and consumer demand but at Mazda we will introduce new models and ensure our product range fits the pace of actual consumer demand in the UK,” concluded Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director of Mazda Motors UK.

The Mazda6e is available to order now, with first customer vehicles expected in UK showrooms this summer. Later in the year, Mazda plans to expand its UK BEV line-up further with the launch of the CX-6e electric SUV.
