Washington DC to add 100 new energy buses to fleet

Washington DC's public transport operator Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) has placed a followup order with New Flyer of America for 75 Xcelsior hybrid-electric forty-foot transit buses and 25 Xcelsior CHARGE NG battery-electric forty-foot transit buses.

The preceding order for New Flyer buses was placed last summer, and this is now a follow-up for the same number of buses. Initially, the order was also made for 75 hybrid buses and 25 electric buses, and contained options for up to 400 additional buses, so this may not be the final curtain for this transaction.

The order is financially supported by federal, state, and local funding as well as funds awarded through the Federal Transit Administration Low or No Emission grant program. According to Metro, the new buses will replace older end-of-life modes, as well as providing “customers with a modernized, efficient passenger experience, while also delivering on Metro’s five-year Strategic Transformation Plan.”

With a fleet of 1,500 buses, the Washington Metro services the National Capital Region, which includes the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. The electric Xcelsior CHARGE NG buses feature up to 32-61 seats and can go up to 220 miles per charge, depending on battery options. The 40-foot hybrid buses hold up to 84 passengers.

“New Flyer is committed to continuing our decades-long relationship with Metro, providing buses that deliver strong value, reliability, and performance,” said Chris Stoddart, President of North American Bus and Coach at NFI. “As Metro phases out aging buses, New Flyer’s Buy America-compliant, advanced hybrid and battery-electric vehicles will boost the efficiency, power, and overall service quality of its transit system while fueling good manufacturing jobs and economic opportunity across the United States.”
