India: PM Modi flags off 225 electric buses in four cities

In a fresh push to advance clean public transport in India, PM Narendra Modi virtually flagged off 225 electric buses on 14 February. The new electric buses form part of the 10,000 units that the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) plans to deploy under the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme.

Of the 225 electric buses, MoHUA deployed 100 units at the Roopnagar Depot in Guwahati, a major city in the north-eastern state of Assam. It deployed another 100 units in western India, including 50 units at the Koradi Depot in Nagpur (Maharashtra) and 50 units in Bhavnagar (Gujarat). MoHUA deployed the remaining 25 units at the CTU Depot in Chandigarh, the joint capital of the northern states of Punjab and Haryana.

JBM Electric Vehicles, a subsidiary of JBM Auto, has supplied the 200 electric buses that MoHUA deployed in Guwahati, Bhavnagar and Nagpur. These are nine-metre low-floor buses equipped with comfort, convenience and security features such as air conditioning, auto-sliding doors and CCTV cameras. The company says that its total electric fleet now stands at over 3,200 units following the latest delivery.

“As a nation, we are steadily progressing towards green mobility. It reflects the power of visionary leadership, progressive policy and public-private collaboration in accelerating large-scale transformation,” said Nishant Arya, JBM Auto’s Vice Chairman & Managing Director.

PMI Electro Mobility supplied the remaining 25 electric buses deployed in Chandigarh. According to a report from The Times of India, these are 12-metre low-floor units equipped with a power-operated ramp, a kneeling mechanism, air conditioning and CCTV cameras. They accommodate 57 people, including 36 seated passengers, a driver and 20 standing passengers. The city now operates a total of 105 electric buses and plans to expand the fleet to 180 units by May.

MoHUA is allocating 10,000 electric buses under the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme to 169 cities with populations of up to four million. For cities with populations exceeding four million, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI)’s PM E-DRIVE Scheme provides subsidies for up to 14,028 electric buses. The ministry has identified nine cities in this category as eligible.
