Ho Chi Minh City launches additional 25 electric bus routes
Local media report that the transport authority in Ho Chi Minh City announced this week the launch of a new package of routes, set to begin operations on 1 March. The initiative is expected to introduce “hundreds of electric buses” into service. The operation of these battery-electric bus routes has been awarded to various transport companies through tenders, specifically to VinBus Ecology Transport Services and Phuong Trang Passenger Transport Joint Stock Company, which will oversee nine and 16 routes, respectively.
As early as summer 2020, Ho Chi Minh City announced plans to electrify its public transport system. The routes are maintained by the same companies now awarded additional contracts; Futa Buslines and VinBus. As of last summer, the metropolis had a total of 613 electric buses, accounting for around 25 per cent of the city’s bus fleet. Additionally, nearly 500 buses run on compressed natural gas (CNG).
Following the administrative merger with the former provinces of Bình Dương and Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu, Ho Chi Minh City now oversees 179 bus routes with approximately 2,320 vehicles. The growing share of electric buses supports the city’s goal of operating a fully “clean” bus fleet by 2030. This target aligns with the national strategy to phase out fossil fuels and applies to all of Vietnam.
