Germany: Metzger Spedition adds fourth electric truck
The newly added MAN eTGX at Metzger Spedition features an installed battery capacity of 534 kWh and delivers a range of up to 500 kilometres. The company can thus cover a wider operating radius in future, as the three Volvo FH Electric trucks that it integrated since 2021 are designed more for short- to medium-distance operations. Metzger expects high utilisation rates for the new MAN truck. The company purchased the vehicle under Baden-Württemberg’s funding programme for electric trucks, through which the German federal state subsidised 50 per cent of the additional costs compared to a diesel vehicle.
The company charges its quartet of electric trucks via four in-house fast-charging stations at its headquarters. The site draws its electricity from a solar installation located on the company’s premises. One special feature: during the day, electric trucks from third parties can also use the charging stations. Metzger aims to support the expansion of electric mobility in the region in this way.
“Since 2021, Metzger has successfully relied on electric mobility in the heavy-duty commercial vehicle sector and has consistently gained positive experience in day-to-day operations. By integrating the MAN eTGX, we are reaching another important milestone in our sustainability strategy,” said Managing Director Johannes Metzger, who is already planning to purchase additional electric trucks. “Over the next three years, we will put six more electric trucks into operation. Our goal is to electrify at least 50 per cent of our entire truck fleet by 2030.” With this approach, Metzger continues to pursue its in-house sustainability strategy ‘Charge the Future’.
To implement this strategy, the company has already initiated several measures. Since December 2024, for example, all remaining combustion-engine vehicles have run exclusively on HVO100. The company’s truck fleet currently comprises around 40 units in total. Solar power generation also forms part of this roadmap.
