Volkswagen delivers two-millionth electric vehicle
Volkswagen entered the battery-electric market in 2013 with the Volkswagen e-Up!, followed by the compact Volkswagen e-Golf. Today, the brand’s BEV portfolio ranges from the compact Volkswagen ID.3 to the Volkswagen ID.7, positioned as an electric alternative to the Passat. An expansion into the smaller car segment with the ID. Polo and ID. Cross is set to follow shortly.
Volkswagen has now delivered its two-millionth battery-electric vehicle from its current ID. family. According to the Wolfsburg-based manufacturer, the milestone vehicle is an ID.3 built at the Volkswagen Zwickau Plant and handed over at the Gläserne Manufaktur Dresden delivery centre. Production of the ID.3 at the Dresden site ended in December, making the anniversary model a Saxon-built vehicle in more ways than one.
Although the Volkswagen ID.3, in production since 2019, accounts for around 628,000 of the two million deliveries, Volkswagen underlines its strategic importance as the first model based on the Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB).
In terms of volume, however, the Volkswagen ID.4 has taken the lead. Launched in 2021, the ID.4 and its European coupé derivative, the Volkswagen ID.5, have together reached around 901,000 deliveries, making the SUV line the brand’s best-selling electric model range to date.
“The ID.4 is a key growth driver for the brand and has played a major part in expanding Volkswagen’s presence on the global BEV markets,” says Volkswagen regarding the electric SUV range. “Apart from Germany and other European countries, the most important sales markets for the SUV model include China and the United States.”
In addition, Volkswagen highlights the Volkswagen ID.7 as one of the defining models in its current line-up. In 2023, the brand expanded its portfolio in the upper mid-size segment with a battery-electric saloon, followed shortly afterwards by the estate version, the Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer.
“The ID.7 represents the technological progress of the ID. family and demonstrates how Volkswagen is introducing electromobility to a new segment with long range and a high level of efficiency and comfort,” the German carmaker states.
Looking ahead, the group plans to launch four new electric city cars across its brands by 2026. Two of these models – the ID. Polo and the ID. Cross – will be positioned under the Volkswagen brand.
“These new models make electromobility accessible to even more customers”, said Board Member for Sales Martin Sander. “Our aim is to introduce attractive, affordable electric vehicles for everyday use into the high-volume small car segment and, in so doing, take the next growth steps in our transformation.”
