Volvo to increase production of EX60 amid strong demand

Volvo Cars plans to increase production of its new mid-size electric SUV, the EX60. According to the company, demand for the model is exceeding internal forecasts – even though the EX60 is currently available to order only in Europe.

The model, unveiled in January, is manufactured at Volvo’s main plant in Torslanda, Gothenburg, alongside internal combustion engine and hybrid models such as the XC60 and V60. Volvo confidently introduced the EX60 as a ‘game changer,’ and the first model based on the new SPA3 platform indeed boasts impressive technical specifications. These include a WLTP range of up to 810 kilometres, 370 kW charging power, and a charging time of 18 or 19 minutes, depending on the battery. Prices for the rear-wheel-drive base model start at €62,990, while the top model, with 500 kW of power and that 810-kilometre WLTP range, is listed at €71,990. All details about the EX60 and the new platform can be found in our comprehensive article on its world premiere.

With these specifications and pricing, it was predictable that the EX60 would stand out in the competitive mid-size SUV segment—this also explains the confidence of the typically reserved Swedes. However, actual demand in the weeks since the premiere has evidently exceeded internal forecasts—and, consequently, the production plans based on those projections.

As the company now announces, management is currently in discussions with the relevant trade unions to keep the Torslanda plant open for an additional week during the summer. According to Volvo, this is ‘the first time in the company’s history.’ At the same time, the company intends to prioritise a ‘steady and prudent ramp-up’ of EX60 production to ensure high-quality manufacturing. However, Volvo has not disclosed the number of units planned for the additional production week.

In Sweden alone, Volvo has already received more than 3,000 binding orders for the EX60. According to the company, ‘nearly all major European markets’ are reporting demand significantly above internal forecasts at its headquarters in Gothenburg, with Germany highlighted alongside Sweden. The pace of incoming orders is reportedly higher than for the EX30 launched in 2023, Volvo’s most affordable model in a higher-volume segment. Volvo also noted that orders have so far only opened in Europe, while the order books for the EX60 in the United States are expected to open later this spring.

“That so many customers ordered the EX60 in the first month has surpassed our expectations, and it’s a good ‘problem’ to have,” says Erik Severinson, chief commercial officer at Volvo Cars. “We are very encouraged to see such strong demand for our game-changing electric SUV, and we are now reviewing our production plans for 2026, as we gear up for the start of customer car production next month.”
