Porsche introduces third variant of the Cayenne Electric
Like all Cayenne models, the new battery-electric variant is available exclusively with all-wheel drive. The typical Porsche distinction between rear-wheel and all-wheel drive, denoted by the suffixes ‘S’ and ‘4S’, does not apply here. The new Cayenne S Electric is therefore positioned between the base model (without a suffix) and the top-of-the-range Turbo model.
The all-wheel-drive system of the new S model delivers 400 kW of power, or 490 kW with Launch Control. The base model achieves 300 kW or 325 kW, respectively. “An additional 165 kW (224 PS) of power, sharpened exterior design, and even more extensive equipment options differentiate the S from the entry-level model,” Porsche states.
Unsurprisingly, the Cayenne S also sits between the base and top models in terms of performance. The new variant accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250km/h. However, there is no difference in the battery: like the other two Cayenne Electric models, the S variant features a high-voltage battery with a gross capacity of 113 kWh. We have explained in detail in our technology deep-dive how this battery is constructed and why its cooling concept is so special. With a charging capacity of up to 400 kW, the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in 16 minutes – this value is identical to the two existing derivatives, as shown in the following table of key technical data.
| Cayenne Electric | Cayenne S Electric | Cayenne Turbo Electric | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drivetrain | AWD | AWD | AWD |
| Power | 325 kW | 490 kW | 850 kW |
| Torque | 835 Nm | 1,080 Nm | 1,500 Nm |
| Acceleration | 4.8 s | 3.8 s | 2.5 s |
| Top speed | 230 km/h | 250 km/h | 260 km/h |
| WLTP range | 642 km | 653 km | 623 km |
| Battery capacity | 113 kWh | 113 kWh | 113 kWh |
| DC charging power | 400 kW | 400 kW | 400 kW |
| DC charging time 10-80% | 16 min | 16 min | 16 min |
| Price | €105,200 Euro | €126,400 Euro | €165,500 Euro |
One figure in this table stands out, however: with a combined WLTP range of up to 653 kilometres, the Cayenne S Electric is the variant with the highest range, even surpassing the slightly less powerful base model. Porsche does not explicitly explain the higher range of the new S model in its announcement, but there is a plausible explanation. While the base Cayenne uses the electric motor with water-jacket cooling from the smaller PPE sibling, the Macan, at the rear axle, the new Cayenne S features the same newly developed motor as the Cayenne Turbo. This is still a permanently excited synchronous machine (PSM), but it incorporates direct oil cooling. “Unlike with conventional electric motors, the heat is dissipated directly from the current-carrying components,” Porsche explains. The pulse inverter on the rear axle uses silicon carbide as a semiconductor material and processes currents of up to 620 amps.”
The aerodynamics also differ slightly from the base model: “The Cayenne S Electric is characterised by model-specific front and rear aprons in Volcano Grey Metallic, while the inserts and diffuser are painted in the body colour. The exterior styling is rounded off by 20-inch Cayenne S Aero wheels,” Porsche states. Additionally, the S model offers optional extras previously only available for the Cayenne Turbo, such as Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus), the active high-end suspension Porsche Active Ride, or the high-performance Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) with yellow brake callipers.
The Cayenne S Electric is available to order now, priced from 126,400 Euro. Like the existing derivatives, the new variant is manufactured at the VW Group plant in Bratislava.
