Eve Energy launches two new solid-state batteries

Chinese battery manufacturer Eve Energy has begun small-scale production of two new solid-state batteries at its factory in Chengdu. While the 'Longquan No. 3' is intended for consumer electronics, the 'Longquan No. 4,' with a capacity of 60 Ah, has been developed for use in electric vehicles.

First, let’s examine the Longquan No. 4, a battery developed specifically for electric vehicles. This battery cell offers a capacity of 60 Ah, demonstrating Eve Energy’s ability to scale its solid-state battery technology from small consumer cells to large power cells for cars. The cell operates stably under a pressure of ≤ 5 MPa, a key milestone for vehicle integration, as this pressure range is mechanically manageable within battery packs.

However, the Longquan No. 4 – like other battery cells in the Longquan family – is still far from mass-market readiness. Eve Energy’s new solid-state battery plant in Chengdu is designed for an annual production capacity of just 500,000 cells, equivalent to around 100 MWh per year. To put this into perspective, such a capacity would only suffice for approximately 1,000 electric vehicles with 100-kWh batteries or 2,000 electric vehicles with 50-kWh batteries. In short, the Longquan No. 4 is likely to become truly compelling for the industry only once Eve Energy significantly scales up production.

At the same time, solid-state batteries remain a critical focus for the future of the automotive industry. They promise higher energy density, faster charging capabilities, improved safety, and, above all, longer ranges for electric vehicles.

A brief note on the Longquan No. 3: this cell is designed for the consumer electronics segment, specifically for smartphones, laptops, and wearables. It is optimised for operation under low pressure (below 2 MPa), a crucial feature since consumer devices, unlike electric vehicles, cannot accommodate heavy mechanical clamping systems. With its high volumetric energy density, Eve Energy aims to enable thinner devices with longer-lasting batteries.

Last September, Eve Energy introduced another product from its Longquan solid-state battery series: the Longquan No. 2, a 10-Ah solid-state battery cell with an energy density of up to 300 Wh/kg or 700 Wh/L. At the time, it was described as being “humanoid robots, unmanned aerial vehicles for use at low altitudes and high-quality AI devices.”
