Stellantis brand DS pulls out of Formula E, Opel to take over
DS is one of the most successful brands in Formula E. Over twelve seasons, DS has participated in eleven, securing four championship titles, 18 victories, 55 podium finishes, and 26 pole positions with various teams. This record speaks for itself.
“At the end of Season 12 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, the Stellantis group’s French brand is evolving its sporting and technological strategy,” Stellantis announced.
This decision means that, ‘to explore new areas of technological innovation,’ DS will focus on its title partnership with the SailGP Team France, announced for January 2026.
“Competition sailing is a particularly rich laboratory for experimenting with new approaches. The work carried out on aerodynamic efficiency, drag reduction, the search for lightness through advanced work on composite materials and the software field, offer particularly interesting areas of research within automotive development,” Stellantis explained. In the same statement, the group acknowledged the transfer of Formula E technologies to series production—though DS may have exhausted this potential.
However, Stellantis will remain active in Formula E at a corporate level, as the group has been represented by two teams in the electric racing series for some time. At the start of the current season, the Citroën brand celebrated its return to international motorsport, taking over Maserati’s internal slot at Stellantis. And there will also be an internal replacement for DS: One day after DS’s withdrawal, Stellantis announced that Opel will take its place starting with the 2026/2027 season. Rumors about Opel’s entry had been circulating for over a year. Now it’s official: Starting at the end of 2026, two Opel GSE race cars will compete in the Formula E for four years.
