Milan: ATM launches tender for 110 electric buses

Milan's public transport company ATM has published a new tender worth over 100 million euros for the delivery of 110 electric buses. The tender also includes a maintenance contract with a duration of ten years.

ATM (Azienda Trasporti Milanesi) has divided its tender into two vehicle configurations. The larger portion consists of 80 twelve-metre low-floor city buses, each designed with three doors. The remaining 30 units are twelve-metre low-floor intercity buses, requiring only two doors.

Bidding opened on 30 March and will close on 18 May. Two days later, ATM plans to begin reviewing the submitted documents, followed by an internal evaluation of the technical and financial proposals by its procurement team.

The framework agreement for the full-service maintenance package will commence on 31 December 2026 and is set to run for ten years, until 30 December 2037, with the option to extend it by a further five years. The procurement of the 110 electric buses is expected to be completed within 48 months.

ATM had previously launched a tender for 340 electric buses as early as late 2022. In 2023, Iveco Bus and Solaris were announced as the winners of that tender. However, the number of electric buses currently in operation in Milan remains unclear. What is certain is that ATM continues to adhere to its goal of converting its entire bus fleet to electric drive by 2030, with plans to deploy over 1,200 electric buses.
