Audi manager confirms A4 E-Tron for 2028 on new SSP Platform
Audi’s Board Member for Technical Development, Rouven Mohr, reportedly told GoAuto that there is “no need to correct” the planned market launch of the A4 E-Tron in 2028. According to the news portal, the A4 E-Tron will be the first Audi model to exploit the “full potential” of the SSP platform. This could include standardised battery architecture, new zonal electronics, and improvements in efficiency and range. However, the report does not provide specific technical details.
Mohr further explained that the A4 E-Tron will be one of the first production models to feature Audi’s new ‘Radical Next’ design language. It will also introduce a new interior concept that more strongly integrates digital functions with classic operating elements, such as buttons and rotary controls. The model is being developed using the Group’s internal ‘Project House’ approach, which Audi states is designed to shorten development times, among other benefits.
With the A4 E-Tron, Audi is positioning itself to compete with the upcoming electric BMW i3 and the electric Mercedes C-Class. Both competitors are driving the electrification of the mid-size segment, while Audi is simultaneously ushering in the generational shift to the SSP architecture with this model. Mohr also confirmed that the classic Avant estate will remain part of the model family, meaning an estate variant will be available.
The confirmation of the timeline is particularly notable because the A4 E-Tron has repeatedly been linked to delays in software development within the Volkswagen Group. Last year, Manager Magazin reported that challenges in the software joint venture with Rivian had pushed the model’s market launch to late 2028. At the time, issues were cited regarding the integration of the new zonal electronics architecture and adaptations for different Group brands. Audi itself has not commented on this but now appears to be adhering to the 2028 schedule.
