Wren Kitchens begins electrification of heavy goods fleet

The UK kitchen retailer Wren Kitchens has begun its fleet electrification journey, following the delivery of 10 electric Mercedes-Benz eActros 600 tractor units. It marks the start of the company's broader ambitions to operate an all-electric HGV fleet.

The delivery of the tractor units – which were supplied by dealer Rygor Auto – are said to represent the first phase of Wren’s ‘Positive Planet’ roadmap towards carbon neutrality. Their purchase was partially funded by the Department for Transport’s £1 billion zero-emission commercial vehicle programme, which is designed to encourage the adoption of electric trucks across the UK.

The trucks will be used by Wren for its nationwide delivery network, and set a precedent for how the kitchen company plans to adopt electromobility in future. Wren Kitchen’s national fleet manager, Phil Bennett, commented: “Maintaining our industry-leading delivery performance while improving safety and reducing emissions is critical, and the eActros 600s allow us to do all three. They’re equipped with the latest safety systems and give our drivers a significantly enhanced working environment.”

Nicola Dainter-Kemsley, Daimler Truck UK key account manager, said: “Seeing the eActros hit the road as part of such an ambitious electrification journey is a real milestone, and we’re excited to be part of it. It’s a real privilege to work with Wren Kitchens on this transition and to help support the next chapter of their logistics operation.”

The tractor units themselves feature battery capacity of 621kWh, promising a minimum range of 500km up to 750km. Each eActros can recharge from 20 to 80 % in one hour with 400kW DC rapid charging. In a statement, Daimler Truck claimed the eActros delivers up to 600kW of peak power as well as regenerative braking and Predictive Powertrain Control.
