Audi hopes to win the race with an electrified quattro four-wheel drive, which will be featured in the 2014 R18 e-tron racecar. The power distribution to the wheels of Audi’s diesel-hybrid is controlled purely electronically, with the front-wheel drive components integrated in the vehicles monocoque. A mere 481 electric ars were newly registered in Germany in February – that’s 60 vehicles less than in January and a measly 0.4 percent more than in February of last year. The numbers in Sweden are not much better: Only 32 Nissan Leafs were newly registered there, compared to 69 Outlander PHEVs.

February 2014 Sales in the U.S.

A total of 1,425 Nissan Leaf were sold in the U.S. in February, 173 more than in January and twice as many as in February of last year. The Chevy Volt was sold 1,210 times – a drop of 25.6 percent compared to the same time period in 2013.

Filling up more quickly: Honda opens an innovative H2-fueling station in California, equipped with the so-called MC Fill fueling process. The technology absorbs heat generated during refuelling, meaning a vehicle can be filled up in half the time compared to how long it takes at other H2-stations. The Japanese carmaker hopes to make MC Fill an industry standard.

Electrify my bicycle: Shareroller offers an ‘electrification kit‘ that fits to bikes from any bikesharing service in the U.S., Canada, or London and would turn it into an e-bike. A retractable wheel is positioned on the front wheel, producing power and allowing for speeds up to 29 kph (18 mph). The kit will cost between 1,350 and 1,650 dollars and will be available as of August.

Video tip 1: Just how much abuse can a Nissan Leaf battery cell take? Apparently a lot! This video shows that even after being damaged with a screwdriver and a gas burner, it still runs just fine.

E-Mobility Index, Geely, Lexus, VW, Toyota.

E-Mobility Index: Roland Berger consultancy has published its ‘E-Mobility Index’ for the first quarter of 2014. It places Japan as the leading nation in EV production and private ownership. However, the report sees America as possibly becoming the biggest local cell manufacturer if Tesla’s Gigafactory goes ahead. The index compares seven leading automotive nations in terms of technology, industry and market development. Apparently, the race is still on as McKinsey’s Electric Vehicle Index put Germany on top of Japan (we reported).

Geely acquires Emerald: The Chinese Geely Group, owner of brands such as Volvo and the the London Taxi Company, has bought the British EV startup Emerald Automotive. The purpose of the acquisition was to promote its ability to develop next-generation electric taxis, Geely says.

European EV and hybrid sales.

Electric vehicle sales in Europe list 1,243 Nissan Leafs making it the best-selling electric car on the continent in January. Far behind, yet second best is the Volvo V60 plug-in with 439 units followed closely by VW’s E-Up (398). Overall, 4,288 EVs were sold.
