BYD and Changan to jointly produce batteries
BYD entered a strategic cooperation agreement with Changan Automobile to jointly manufacture batteries for electric vehicles. Both companies will produce up to 10 GWh of batteries together and sell as well as recycle those through a wide reaching joint venture based in Chongqing.
China: Beijing Electric Vehicle bets on battery-swap
BJEV is launching a battery-swap service to get ahead in China’s competitive market. They will install the first 100 battery changing station in Beijing this year as an add on to their EV300 model. Moreover, this symbolises a comeback of battery swapping only this time with more refined business models.
Voltabox takes over Navitas Systems
The German battery manufacturer Voltabox is continuing their expansion, and has purchased the US battery manufacturer Navitas Systems, a specialist for battery systems in the intralogistic area. The supervisory board still has to confirm the decision, however.
Leclanche & Exide form JV to make batteries for India
India’s largest battery maker, Exide Industries set up a joint venture with Leclanché of Switzerland to make batteries for electric vehicles and stationery energy storage in India. The partnership will focus on electric buses and e-rickshaws first and marks Exide’s transition to Li-ion technology.
BYD to more than double battery production by 2020
BYD’s planned battery factory in Qinghai province is becoming much bigger than previously thought. Bloomberg reports BYD is planning to scale up to full capacity of 24 GWh already next year. Globally BYD aims to churn out 28 GWh this year before doubling their output to 60 GWh in 2020.
South Korea to invest €2BN into fuel cell vehicles
The government in Seoul agreed with South Korea’s industry to invest about 2 billion euros (2.6 trillion Won) into hydrogen mobility over the next five years. Facilities building fuel cell vehicles and those doing R&D will receive funding in order to reach the ambitious targets.
Tesla CEO favours Gigafactory in Germany
Elon Musk has taken to Twitter – no surprises here – to add some detail to plans for a Gigafactory in Europe. And – here’s the surprise – he named Germany as a “leading choice” mainly due to its location in the centre of Europe.
Voltabox enters battery direct sales
Voltabox will be beginning direct sales of their battery systems for intra-logistic purposes. The first success of the sales unit is the delivery of lithium-ion batteries to a “high-profile, large-scale German industrial company ” by an authorized industrial truck distributor.
UK awards 22M GBP to next-gen battery solutions
The UK government’s Faraday Battery Challenge worth 22 million pounds in funding has selected the winning projects. Among them are ultra-fast charging solid-state batteries from partners such as Honda or an electrified drive train from McLaren Automotive.
