LG Chem to supply hundreds of millions of cells to BMZ

BMZ, a battery assembly specialist in Germany, has made a deal with Korea’s LG Chem over the delivery of a couple hundreds of million of cells throughout 2022. The German supplier wants to secure its own supply in order to fulfill its obligations with makers of all sorts of (light) electric vehicles.

Manz receives large automobile battery order

Northvolt begins construction of R&D center

The Swedish Northvolt has started construction on their research and development center in Västerås. The facility is supposed to start developing, testing and industrializing lithium ion batteries as of 2019. This is a major step towards the planned lithium-ion battery factory in Skellefteå.

Following the change in leadership, VW under Herbert Diess is considering producing their own battery cells, according to German media reports. The company is analyzing “all options, including in-house production, Joint Ventures or the purchasing of other companies competencies”, said a spokesperson.

SOLID: scalable solid-state battery production

Researchers at Fraunhofer ISC have embarked on a collaborative effort to develop a low-cost method for mass production of solid-state batteries using sol-gel. Funded with 3.2 million euros, first results are due in a year with the project running until 2020.
