Moment Energy opens new second-life facility in Vancouver
The new facility from Moment Energy, which is set to open later this month, does not focus on conventional battery recycling aimed at recovering ‘black mass’ or raw materials such as lithium, cobalt or nickel. Instead, Moment Energy bases its business model on ‘repurposing’ used batteries. Also known as ‘second life’, the approach gives decommissioned electric vehicle batteries a new application. Aachen-based startup Voltfang follows the same strategy.
Using these retired EV batteries, the company builds stationary battery energy storage systems (BESS). One of its key partners is Mercedes-Benz Energy, which has supplied retired vehicle batteries since 2022. These include batteries from test vehicles and accident-damaged cars, as only a limited number of regular EV batteries have so far reached the end of their lifecycle.
The planned opening of the Vancouver facility follows closely on the heels of the company’s Series B funding round, which raised $40 million. This brings the total capital raised to over $100 million.
The new facility is expected to significantly expand Moment Energy’s production capacity to meet the growing demand for its BESS solutions from data centres, industrial customers, and energy providers.
