Tesla’s new autopilot chip and robo-taxi software

Tesla presented its latest take at autonomous driving at its “Autonomy Day” and will install the Autopilot technology in all new vehicles with immediate effect. Utilising it, Tesla plans to launch its peer-to-peer “Robotaxi” service as early as next year, provided the authorities allow it.

Rear wheel drive Model 3 available in EU & Asia

The Tesla Model 3 is now available in Europe and China with rear-wheel drive and the Standard Plus battery version. In Germany, Tesla is charging a base price of 44,500 euros (plus a handling fee of 980 euros) for this version, which offers a WLTP range of 415 km.

Will Tesla Models S and X get a reluctance motor?

Tesla apparently plans to switch from the three-phase asynchronous to the reluctance motor on their Model S as well as the Model X. As far as the Model 3 is concerned, it looks as if the first U.S. deliveries of the new basic version are still to come.

Tesla releases production and delivery numbers

Tesla delivered around 63,000 vehicles in the first quarter of 2019, including around 50,900 Model 3 and 12,100 Model S and Model X. This corresponds to an increase of 110 per cent compared to the same quarter last year. Compared to the last quarter of 2018, however, this represents a decline of 31 per cent.

Tesla appears to be negotiating with Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) to supply battery cells for its Model 3, manufactured in Shanghai, China. The talks between Tesla and CATL have been concerning the required specifications for the cells. The battery cell manufacturer has since denied intentions of entering business with Tesla.

Toyota blames Tesla for defectors

Tesla’s Model 3 is apparently causing a bit of trouble for Toyota’s US American market: As Toyota’s North American boss Jim Lentz recently admitted, around nine percent of Toyota customers are unfaithful to the brand. About half of them are (former) Prius owners who migrate to Tesla.
