Flagships project to put fuel cell drives on cargo ships

Within the framework of the European innovation project Flagships, the world’s first commercial cargo ship with hydrogen propulsion is to go into operation on the Seine in Paris this year. This has significantly shifted the focus of the project initiated in 2018.

World’s largest electric ferry launches in Norway

The world’s largest all-electric ferry yet has gone into service in Norway on a route across the Oslo Fjord. Bastø Electric is the first of three battery-powered ferries operated by the shipping company Bastø Fosen to enter Norwegian waters with more in the making in Turkey.

Electric charter boat fleet along Telemark Canal

In spring 2021, the first all-electric charter fleet will start operating on the Norwegian Telemark Canal. The fleet will be comprised of six charter boats equipped with Torqeedo e-drives from the Slovenian shipyard Greenline Yachts.

Danfoss to fit hybrid drives on exploration vessels

Danfoss Editron has received an order from the Norwegian shipyard Grovfjord Mekaniske Verksted (GMV) to supply hybrid propulsion systems for a fleet of unmanned exploration vessels. Four of the vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2021, with seven more to follow in the following months.

Brødrene Aa developing a 23 knot electric ferry

In Norway, a 42-meter-long, all-electric ferry for 297 passengers will soon go into operation. The Rygerelektra, built by the Norwegian shipbuilder Brødrene Aa, will be used by ferry operator Rødne Fjord Cruise as a sightseeing ship in the coastal town of Stavanger in the south of Norway.

Havyard presents electric sightseeing boat concept

The Norwegian shipbuilder Havyard has presented a design concept for electrically powered sightseeing ships for use in cities and fjords. The concept was developed within the framework of a cooperation agreement concluded last year with the Norwegian research organisation SINTEF.

Five electric ferries to hit Oslo waters

On the Oslofjord, at the northern end of which lies the Norwegian capital Oslo, five electric ferries will be put into operation by 2022 – the first of these as early as 2021. The transport authority Ruter has awarded the contract to operate the electric ferries to the Norwegian provider Boreal Sjø.

German company IPT Technology has introduced an inductive charging system for battery electric ferries. The system can achieve charging capacities of up to 100 kW. This wireless ship charging is already being used in a first project in Norway.

Atlantic Offshore to convert two hybrid ships

Wärtsilä will convert two supply vessels of the Norwegian operator Atlantic Offshore to hybrid propulsion. The Finnish technology group is developing and supplying battery packages for this purpose, which are to be installed in the Ocean Star and the Ocean Art by the beginning of 2020.

Hurtigruten offers electric catamaran excursions

The Norwegian shipping company Hurtigruten is building the startup Brim Explorer, a battery-powered catamaran for polar water exploration. Starting in spring 2020, the ship will undertake various daily excursions under the Hurtigruten Svalbard brand.

Norway: Siemens opens battery factory for ships

Siemens has opened an “advanced robotized and digitized” battery module factory in Trondheim, where 55 battery modules will be assembled per shift for  marine and offshore markets. The factory comprises a line with eight robot stations and a capacity of up to 300 MWh per year.

Norway commissions high speed hydrogen ferry

Norway is funding a hydrogen-powered high speed ferry and a short-sea freighter through their PILOT-E programme. They awarded a grant to Hyon, a joint venture between Nel, Hexagon Composites and PowerCell Sweden to realise the project together with partners.

Rolls-Royce is launching a lithium-ion based energy storage system for ships. This is the first time the British propulsion specialist will deliver batteries to fit their drives as such units were previously supplied by an external party. The SAVe Energy system is modular.

Norway to protect fjords with zero-emission zone

Norway is planning on creating the first zero-emissions zone on water. The parliament has accepted a resolution which would see emissions banned in the world heritage fjords “as soon as technically possible and no later than 2026”.
