The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has confirmed that he will expand the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) London-wide. The expansion will come into effect on Tuesday 29 August 2023 and will operate across all of London up to the existing Low Emission Zone boundary.

Aston-Martin-CEO Andy Palmer’s remark refers to the Formula E, about which he also said, the brand would be very interested to take part once the change of cars becomes obsolete in season 2018/19.

“These car manufacturers admit they’ve got to cut emissions from their vehicles, but they confine their funding to Germany alone. This is ridiculous, as their vehicles are driven all over Europe, including on London’s roads.”

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan called out Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Volkswagen to help fund clean air initiatives in Britain as they were otherwise operating with “double standards”.

Elżbieta Bieńkowska, the European Union’s industry commissioner, commented on tougher rules to get cars that are more polluting when driven than when tested off the roads. While no independent EU emission testing institution will be created, Brussels will be allowed to fine carmakers up to 30,000 euros per vehicle if caught.

Sadiq-Khan“I am doing all I can in London – but the only way we can make our lethal air safe is if the government commits to the major measures experts agree are necessary to tackle this incredibly serious issue.”

In the wake of the EU decision, London mayor Sadiq Khan demands major interventions including a national diesel scrappage fund, new low emission zones across the UK and a Clean Air Act for the 21st Century from the British government. The latter however was instrumental in preventing EU oversight of emission testing.

Theresa-May“We will be producing a new air quality plan – we’ve been required to do that by the courts. (…) But I’m very conscious of the fact that past governments have encouraged people to buy diesel cars and we need to take that into account.”

With these words UK Prime Minister Theresa May stops short any hope that her Tory government will take to the task to end diesel and/or act for air quality enthusiastically or in a proactive manner.

Satoshi Ogiso, who has worked on the Toyota Prius and fuel cell development programme, says that an EV with more range than 300 km, however, will come with a high price tag – at least until 2025.

London’s new mayor Sadiq Khan has proposed a new ‘T-Charge’ (for toxicity) that would penalise drivers of polluting vehicles in the British capital. As it will supposedly be based on NOx emissions, diesel vehicles would be hit first with the fee.

Honda Motor President and CEO Takahiro Hachigo acknowledges plug-in hybrids but ultimately aims at electric and fuel cell vehicles instead. His prediction is that by 2050, “these cars will be dominant in the mix of models we build.”
