Electra Meccanica launches first deliveries of the ‘Solo’

Canadian company Electra Meccanica has commenced the first commercial deliveries of its single-seat Solo electric vehicle as part of an unveiling event held in Los Angeles, California on 4 October. Electra Meccanica will continue to ramp production with investor and manufacturing partner Zongshen Industrial Group.

Better late than never – it is hard to put it any other way with this electric trike called Solo from the Canadian company Electra Meccanica. While first reports date back to 2016 and again 2018 when deliveries were set to start, it took until today for production to take off.

Nissan Leaf as Nismo: A sporty makeover awaits the Leaf as Nissan has prepared a Nismo concept due to meet the eyes of the world in Tokyo later this month. Well, some pictures are in circulation already but nothing is known about production plans or an eventual on sale date. What is Nismo about the Leaf is mainly the racy exterior and a chique interior while technology is essentially the same apart from a sport-tuned suspension, high-performance tires, and a custom-tuned computer that delivers instant acceleration at all speeds.

New player on e-van market: The electric truck business is brewing in Europe and SAIC decided to add its Maxus EV80 to the mix. Mercedes accelerates electric car roll-out: The premium segment is under pressure since diesel’s dirty secret has been aired, emission rules become ever tighter, and Tesla writes record after record and so Daimler reacts. 10 EVs by 2022 is the latest target – that is 3 years earlier than initially planned in Paris. On Wednesday’s annual conference in Berlin, CEO Dieter Zetsche also announced, he would invest 10bn euros in order to expand the electric lineup under the EQ label that shall cover every segment from compact to luxury. Fuel cells were not mentioned though.

Two new BMW i by 2019? The Bavarians apparently want to push their EV portfolio, which is why the board won’t attend the Paris Auto Show. Instead, they will sit down to decide on their next move. Both an electric Mini and an electric SUV are on the table. Meanwhile, BMW is ready to invest in battery production and will build a factory for high voltage batteries in Shenyang in China.

Panamera plug-in premiere: The second and most technical advanced version of the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid will officially be unveiled in Paris at the end of the month. Misuse of funds: China is accusing a total of 25 carmakers of cheating in the country’s subsidies programme for electric vehicles. On the list of offenders is also JAC, with whom VW is in talks about a possible joint venture. Nissan, Hyundai and Geely don’t seem to have a spotless record either. China spend 4.5bn dollars in subsidies for electrification last year alone.

First images of the Zinoro 60H: Being a joint venture between Brilliance and BMW, the Chinese brand’s plug-in SUV definitely shares some DNA with the X1. The Zinoro 60H with 60 km of purely electric range replaces the fully-electric 1E, which was based on the previous generation of the BMW X1.

Prius Plug-in from 34,495 euros? Toyota now offers the next generation of its plug-in hybrid. In the Netherlands, the PHEV with an all-electric range of 35 km will be about 15 percent more expensive than the hybrid version without plug. Whether it will have the same price tag in other EU countries remains to be seen.

Getting ready for market introduction: Japanese company FOMM (First One Mile Mobility) wants to introduce its first EV made in Thailand by the end of the year. The four-seater is said to cost the equivalent of 8,625 dollars and its batteries can be charged at home or be replaced at service stations.

Solo is coming: Canadian Electra Meccanica has announced its electric three-wheeler Solo for September 9th. Pricing is said to start at 19,888 Canadian dollars (15,150 USD). The 8,64 kWh Li-ion battery allows for a maximum range of 160 km, while top speed is set at 220 kph.

China takes over production lead: According to the McKinsey Electric Vehicle Index, China is now the most important country in terms or churning out EVs, pushing Japan into second place. Germany still holds the third position, but is said to have the most potential. It could therefore take the lead in the coming five years.

VW fights: Volkswagen is to present six electric concepts by 2018 and four are likely to see the light at the end of a serial production line. Autobild reports of a CUVe, a Coupé Utility Vehicle in two versions, designed to share the market with Tesla’s Model 3. The NUVe however, takes its inspiration from the BMW i3 and will sit next to the e-Golf when it debuts in Paris this fall. And, with the Phaeton discontinued, an electric SUV jointly made with Audi will eventually take its place.

34 new energy vehicles by 2025 is Changan’s goal as it reserves 18bn yuan (2.7bn USD) for the development of electric and plug-in hybrid models. The Chinese carmaker hopes to sell two million EV within the next decade, while it turns to Japan for components and Ford for batteries and controls.

Electric SUV by Daimler: Mercedes will bring a concept electric SUV to Paris this year, Autocar has learned. It previews the dedicated electric models the German carmaker already planned and may make it into serial production by 2019.

Tesla’s Q1: The Californians sold 50 percent more EVs last quarter than in Q1 2015, but missed its target of 16,000 units. Still, with 14,820 Tesla delivered worldwide, the manufacturer says it is on course to hit the 80-90,000 vehicle mark this year. Tesla explained the delay with problems with suppliers, but also admitted that it tried to included too much new technology in the first version Model X too soon.

PSA’s mid-term plan: Peugeot, Citroën and DS announced their “Push to Pass” strategy, saying they will launch seven plug-in hybrid models, as well as four pure electric vehicles by 2021. Coming Solo: The Canadian three-wheeler inspired by Corbin Sparrow is set for production by June already. Electra Meccanica also delivered details on its Solo EV, saying top speed is given at 87 mph, range at 100 miles and all that for 15,000 U.S. dollars.

Dashboard USA: Sales of (partially) electric vehicles rose in the United States in March. 7,115 EVs were sold (+15,9%), as well as 5,290 PHEVs – that’s an increase of +75,2 percent compared to the same month last year. Sales of HEVs dropped 14.6%, as only 28,756 hybrids found a home.

Brand new BMWi models: BMW has given an update on its future strategy, in which e-mobility plays a major role. A new electric model will be introduced at the beginning of the next decade, called the BWM i Next – which will also be the first offspring of the project i2.0that focuses more on connected and automated driving. Other plug-in hybrids will follow, while research for a fuel cell vehicle continues. Furthermore, there will be a new roadster version of the i8 by 2018, and most imporntantly, the i3 will be upgraded with a 50 percent bigger battery and revised design in the second half of this year. It should be availble in four variants with a small or larger battery and with or without range extender.

Smart e-bike: Chinese smartphone firm Xiaomi is venturing into the pedelec field and is expected to launch a smart electric bike within the next month. Priced at about 450 – 550 dollars, the pedal-assisted bike will join a growing portfolio that includes a Segway-styled scooter, as well as cycle sub brands.

Solo sneak-peak: Electra Meccanica looks well on target for production of its planned electric trike, the Solo. As the name suggests, it seats one person and first specs speak of 87 mph top speed, a 100 mile range and most astonishingly, a price around 15,000 dollars.
