The Post subsidiary StreetScooter is getting a new boss. On 1 April, Jörg Sommer, previously COO at the e-truck manufacturer Chanje, will move from California to the German city of Aachen to expand the StreetScooter management team as their new CEO.
A decision on the establishment of industrial battery cell production in Germany will be made this year, according to the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy. Talks between the federal government and companies are already underway.
The plans for the first German battery cell factory are taking more definitive shape. Driven by Professor Günther Schuh from Aachen, who is behind e.Go Mobile, several companies have joined the cause, including StreetScooter and the BMZ Group, which had taken over the battery cell consortium TerraE, as reported.
In addition to its existing e-vehicles, Messe Frankfurt is now also using three StreetScooters electric vans as part of a two-year test run. The charging infrastructure will be provided by the trade fair with 13 charging stations on site for both exhibitors and visitors.
Volkswagen previously wanted to take over the Post subsidiary StreetScooter. Discussions began taking place at the beginning of 2017 but ultimately failed due to different price expectations. As is well known, the German Post does not aim to be a vehicle manufacturer in the long run.
The Deutsche Post subsidiary StreetScooter has received yet another major order for its electric vans. German startup UZE Mobility has just bought 500 of the StreetScooter models Work and Work L and initially wants to use them in German cities as car-sharing vehicles – for free.
The electric van maker owned by DP/DHL has received the EC approval to serially produce its basic Work electric van. The approval for large series production also applies to other EU countries and to Switzerland and Norway so that StreetScooter may fulfil more orders coming from third parties.
A few days after the startup UZE Mobility announced their plan to lend out electric transporters free of charge, the company has announced a new major investor: vehicle manufacturers LUEG AG, one of the largest sales partners for Daimler in Germany, is investing €1M in UZE.
UZE Mobility is yet another start-up from Aachen, the town that turned into Germany’s unofficial e-mobility capital. Unlike other start-ups though, UZE Mobility want to offer their services free of charge to users as they think they found innovative revenue streams.
The TerraE consortium that had planned to set up a mega battery cell production in Germany has failed as none of the businesses involved was ready to shoulder the investment, reports German media. TerraE thus follows other players in the country that continue to ignore the government calling on them to do their bit.
Bosch has developed a taste for sharing. After its Coup e-scooter service is running well, the company is looking to much bigger things. Bosch wants to start lending electric vans of StreetScooter at DIY stores across Germany. If the pilot works, a wider roll-out is imminent.
The lines at Ford’s factory in Cologne have begun rolling in order to make the largest electric van in the StreetScooter line-up, the Work XL. Based on the Ford Transit and equipped with EV technology by DP/DHL, they expect to activate the first 1,000 units this year.
After the German ministry for vehicles (KBA) followed the suspicion that there may be extensive heavy metal contamination among EV components used in the Volkswagen brands VW, Audi and Porsche, affected components have now been found in the German Post’s StreetScooter.
The German postal agency Deutsche Post has tasked the investment bank Goldman Sachs with evaluating potential future options for the StreetScooter e-transporter. Possible are partnerships, sale of the technology or opening up for public investment.
Innogy subsidiary Westnetz and StreetScooter have entered a development partnership. Westnetz will purchase a total of 300 electric vans by 2022 that StreetScooter will modify according to the utility’s requirements. This includes fuel cell systems, a first for StreetScooter.
The StreetScooter saga at Deutsche Post continues after the former leader Jürgen Gerdes got laid off last week. Head of the board, Frank Appel now gave an outlook for the electric van making business, saying DP/DHL would consider selling the production.

StreetScooter, the electric van building subsidiary of Deutsche Post/DHL has opened its second production facility. The factory in the German town of Düren belongs to supplier Neapco and will make up to 10,000 EVs a year, answering to growing demand from third parties.
The German minister for transport Andreas Scheuer has handed over the first four grants for the acquisition of 2,000 new EVs and the required charging infrastructure as a part of the Clean Air 2017-2020 program.

Battery modules of the BMW i are now also getting part of the fully electrified delivery vans made by the Deutsche Post DHL. According to the German carmaker, these modules are equivalent to those used for the BMW i3.

Nissan with longer range and bigger recall: Like DHL, Nissan has been making electric vans for some time and just gave its e-NV200 a range update. The new 40 kWh battery adds another 60 percent and thus enables electric driving over 280 km (NEDC). Over in Japan, the news do not look as good though as Nissan has issued a recall that affects 1.2m vehicles with the Leaf among them. Checks had uncovered a widespread mishandling of domestic safety inspection with uncertified employees overseeing testing. Honda sports EV: Honda pushes for electrification and recently unveiled its Urban EV on a whole new platform so more models were to be expected. First one up is a sporty iteration of the supermini and a teaser photo is circulating. Building up on existing EVs as well is GM, that just announced another two fully electric vehicles to be due within the next 18 months using technology from the Chevy Bolt. They are only the start however, of an electrification initiative that includes 20 EVs by 2023. At the same time, GM competitor Ford said it would quicken its stride into electric terrain and has set up Team Edison to deal with anything EV.
