Field testing electric trucks: Researchers at the German University Fulda and four industry partners want to determine the framework conditions under which the operation of up to 18-ton electric trucks is economically viable for trucking agencies. For two years, they will field test different electric trucks and adjust parameters to optimise cost effectiveness.

Stopping battery drainage: The Ohio State University has developed a plastic membrane said to keep batteries from discharging while they are not in use. The technology, for which the patent is still pending, could also be used in electric cars.

Rare earth free motors: Honda has kicked off production of its hybrid motors, said not to use any rare earth materials. As reported, the neodymium magnet for the motor was developed together with Daido Steel and will first be used in the Honda Freed.
