Audi is starting with their mass serial production of the e-tron in Brussels today. The world premiere for the electric SUV will be in San Francisco on the 17th of September. Originally, the presentation had been planned to take place in Brussels at the end of August, before it was moved across the world.

The factory in the Belgian capital was modernized ahead of the production start and staff were given additional training for the coming new processes. According to Audi, the location was upgraded so heavily that it has reached a certified CO2 neutral production process. The company has added a few in-house competencies in preparation for the e-tron, including battery production and powertrains according to Patrick Danau, speaker for the board of Audi Brussels.

In the facility, chassis production, paint shop and assembly lines were upgraded step by step, as well as the set up of a new battery production assembly. The electric powertrains are brought in from the motor factory in Hungary, specifically at two axle-mounted motors per e-tron, as the e-SUV features four-wheel drive. On an 8,500 m² facility a subsidiary of the company is manufacturing electric motor systems in a single shift unit. Three-shift operations will be introduced soon however. The cost for the upgrade ran into the double-digit million area.
