Hyundai upgrades Ioniq electric car with more range
Hyundai reveals details of the new Ioniq edition that is expected in hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants in Europe from July, followed by the all-electric Ioniq in September. The most important innovation is the BEV’s updated battery capacity.
Hyundai had envisioned the Ioniq from the start to enable all forms of electrification. The updated version of the battery-electric model sees and increased capacity from 28 to 38.3 kWh to enable 294 kilometres of WLTP range (183 miles). The electric motor delivers a maximum power of 136 PS and is fitted with a 7.2-kW onboard charger— an upgrade from current 6.6-kW—for Type 2 AC charging. For rapid charging, at a 100-kW fast-charging station, the battery can reach 80% charge in as little as 54 minutes.
The Ioniq plug-in hybrid and hybrid continue to use the same motor system where the plug-in version’s electric motor delivers 60.5 PS (44.5 kW) powered by an 8.9 kWh lithium-ion-polymer battery. Drivers choosing the Ioniq PHEV can rely on 52 kilometres (32 miles) of pure electric driving range (WLTP). The electric motor enables the Ioniq Hybrid to operate in pure electric mode at speeds up to 120 km/h.
To maximise fuel efficiency, Hyundai introduces the new Eco-Driving Assist System (Eco DAS) for both hybrids. It includes a Coasting Guide and also a Predictive Energy Management system, which manages the battery in uphill and downhill situations. When the system detects a low SOC during uphill driving, the Ionniq hybrids begin charging the battery through the internal-combustion engine to then engage the electric motor in downhill driving to minimise fuel consumption. All new models also feature Regenerative Braking, which allows drivers to select different intensity levels via the paddle shifters.
In terms of other upgrades that had not been announced previously, the new versions emphasise connectivity. This technology allows owners of the plug-in or electric model to remotely check the status of their battery and also to schedule and control charging remotely.
The Hyundai Ioniq hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants will arrive in Europe this July with the battery-electric car to follow in September. Prices must yet be published.
