Singapore’s largest transport operator ComfortDelgro has ordered 2,000 additional Ioniq hybrid taxis from Hyundai Motor. 1,500 of the hybrid EVs will arrive by the end of this year, with the other 500 planned for delivery at the beginning of 2020.

This is not the first hybrid vehicle order for Hyundai by ComfortDelgro, which bought 1,200 hybrid taxes last year. The company controls about 60% of the 20,000 taxis in Singapore, so the acquisition is likely to have a big impact on the environmental conditions in the Asian nation.

A Hyundai spokesperson said: “We have strengthened our position in the eco-friendly taxi market by providing the Ioniq hybrid taxis to Singapore, which is not only the regional hub for finance and distribution but also a popular tourist location with 15 million visitors annually.”

Starting with the taxi version of Hyundai’s Sonata sedan, the automaker has been providing vehicles for ComfortDelGro since 2007. So far, Hyundai has sold about 26,000 vehicles in Singapore placing it among the largest vehicle provider in the city state’s taxi industry, with a 56 per cent market share.
