Onto orders 700 Fisker Ocean electric SUVs

UK electric car subscription service Onto has signed an agreement with Fisker to supply up to 700 units of the Fisker Ocean EV in 2023. This would bring Onto’s fleet to around 3,000 electric cars.

Production of Fisker’s e-SUV is reportedly scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2022 with Magna’s contract manufacturer. After unfruitful negotiations with VW to use the MEB for the Ocean, the fully electric SUV is now based on Magna’s electric vehicle architecture. For Fisker, this is not the first large order for the Ocean: The Danish ride-hailing provider Viggo had already ordered 300 units in 2020.

The agreement with Onto also means that Fisker will also build right-hand drive models of the Ocean right at the start of production. Onto is the first customer from the United Kingdom, Fisker said. In 2023 for the duration of that year, Onto will also be the exclusive partner for rental or subscription fleets in the UK, meaning that other providers won’t be able to follow suit until 2024. In December last year, the company led by Danish entrepreneur Henrik Fisker announced plans to enter the UK market in 2023. The opportunity for customers to rent and trial a vehicle before purchase should be in Fisker’s interests.

“We are seeing the rapid growth of innovative companies like Onto that are enabling the transition to electric mobility,” says Henrik Fisker. “Our focus for business-to-business reservations is on high-quality companies that share our commitment to deliver an outstanding customer experience. Our partnership with Onto is a significant step in rapidly building our presence in the UK electric vehicle market.”

Onto already provides subscription services for Rob Jolly, CEO and co-founder of Onto, added: “Fisker’s impressive goals for electrification, coupled with their reputation for always introducing the latest technology, match our own, and we are excited to go on this journey with them. Onto subscribers will be able to enjoy all the benefits of the impressive Fisker Ocean together with our hassle-free service. ”

Onto has placed a slew of electric car orders since last summer. In July last year, the just-renamed Onto (previously Evezy)  ordered over a thousand Zoe electric cars and 600 EVs from PSA brands, namely the Peugeot e-208 and DS 3 Crossback E-Tense. This year, another 275 electric cars were ordered from Hyundai, as well as 300 Audi e-tron. When still called Evezy, the company had already set itself up with several Nissan Leaf, BMW i3, Tesla Model 3 and Jaguar I-Pace.

For its part, Fisker already underway with the next electric model. In February this year, Fisker announced a large-scale electric vehicle project with the Apple contract manufacturer Hon Hai aka Foxconn.

Update 26 May 2021: Onto has ordered 250 more electric cars. This time the choice was the Peugeot e-2008, with deliveries scheduled to begin in June. The order follows on from last year’s order of 300 Peugeot e-208s. Rob Jolly, CEO and co-founder of Onto, said: “The PEUGEOT e-208 has been a popular model with customers and we’re excited to welcome Peugeot’s second electric vehicle to our fleet.”
