Amazon orders 20 FH Electric from Volvo Trucks

In Germany, Volvo Trucks is to deliver 20 FH Electric heavy-duty electric trucks to Amazon before the end of the year. The electric trucks are to replace Amazon’s old diesel vehicles. Volvo Trucks only recently started series production of the FH Electric in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Amazon has committed to becoming CO2-neutral throughout the company by 2040. The company describes the transport sector as being the “central on this path” along this road. In Germany, the 20 examples of the FH Electric from Volvo Trucks will now play a key role in the electrification of longer routes and heavier loads. The group will also test the battery-electric long-distance truck Mercedes-Benz eActros LongHaul in real-world operation in Germany next year.

Andreas Marschner, Vice Presidentof  Transportation Services Europe at Amazon, says that the switch to zero-emission transport poses a particular challenge in the middle mile. “That is why the commissioning of these first electric trucks is an important milestone for us.”

Amazon is among the first customers for the FH Electric truck, which has been rolling off the assembly line in Gothenburg since September along with the other two heavy-duty electric truck models, the FM and FMX. From next year onwards, the trucks will also be produced in Ghent, Belgium.

Volvo says it is the world’s first truck manufacturer to start series production of heavy-duty electric trucks weighing 44 tonnes with these three models.

Volvo Trucks is now producing a total of six electric trucks in series – the other three models are the electric versions of the Volvo FE and Volvo FL medium-duty truck models and the VNR for North America.

As of September, Volvo Trucks has already sold more than 2,600 electric trucks, including about 1,000 units of heavy-duty models. The Swedish company expects that by 2030, at least 50 per cent of its truck sales globally will be electric.
