Siemens to provide electric car charging in Saudi Arabia
Siemens has received an order to supply charging stations for electric vehicles for Electromin’s planned charging network in Saudi Arabia. This includes the ultra-fast Sicharge D chargers that use direct current and the smart VersiCharge AC wall or pole mounted units that run on alternating current.
Electromin is the e-mobility business unit from Petromin, the Saudi Arabian lubricant manufacturer and automotive service provider. The company wants to establish a nationwide charging network for electric vehicles in Saudi Arabia. So far, the German company has not revealed how many AC and HPC charging points it will supply, nor has it specified with “EVs,” whether this is only electric cars or also other vehicle types, but judging from the charger types named, electric cars are meant.
The agreement secures the supply of Siemens charging infrastructure to the Electromin network, including the Sicharge D ultra-fast DC charging pole and the VersiCharge AC charging system for wall or pedestal mounting, both of which are primarily designed for electric cars. Siemens also has systems specifically designed for larger electric vehicles, such as trucks and buses as well as inductive charging systems.
Earlier this year, in the neighbouring country of UAE, the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure selected Siemens to set up a nationwide network of ultra-fast charging stations for electric cars. Here, Sicharge D 160 kW and 180 kW fast charging solutions will be installed on the highways in Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, Umm al-Quwain and Fujairah.
For the project in Saudi Arabia, Karim Mousa, senior vice president for eMobility at Siemens in the Middle East was present at the signing ceremony: “We look forward to working with Electromin on this important project, which underlines our commitment to sustainability programmes in Saudi Arabia,” Mousa said. “Electric vehicles are the key technology to decarbonise road transport, and Siemens is proud to provide the infrastructure that will accelerate the growth of electric vehicle use and support the Saudi Green Initiative.”
